Do you have to take your hands out of your pockets in front of a judge?

I know they always tell you to and its out of "respect" but could you say no and leave them in your pockets? From a legal point of view where would you stand if you said "no, i'll leave then in thanks", Also, showing this "dis-respect" in front of the presiding judge how much more inclined do you think he/she would be to rule against or be harsher on you for not doing something you are not under any obligation to do, just merely to do it in spite of not doing as he/she asks to teach you a lesson.
